The York Energy Centre: Veresen’s Ontario Natural Gas Power Plant
Clean Natural Gas-Fired Power Generation in Ontario
The York Energy Centre (YEC) is a Natural Gas Electrical Power Plant that provides power during peak demand periods. Located northwest of Newmarket, Ontario in the Township of King, and commissioned in May 2012, the York Energy Centre has the capacity to produce reliable electricity for over 400,000 homes in the Greater Toronto Area. This unique facility is the largest quick-response natural gas power plant in Ontario, allowing emergency response generation to the grid in less than 30 minutes, as well as supporting intermittent supply from wind, solar or other non-baseload renewables. It is a key energy facility for power generation in Ontario.
Veresen is a 50% owner of the 400 MW York Energy Centre.
Veresen’s Power Generation Business
We have grown our Power business through greenfield development and acquisitions into a diverse portfolio of power generation facilities. A significant portion of our power facilities is underpinned with long-term capacity payment-based energy contracts that provide stable cash flows not significantly influenced by commodity prices or volumes of electricity generated.
